Let’s face it, summer weather can get awfully hot. Sure, you can cool off in a pool, but that’s not everybody’s cup of tea. For many of us, the best way to cool down during the summer is with a chilly thriller that turns our blood to ice, sets our spine tingling, and keeps us turning the pages.

Lately, one of the most popular writers of icy thrills has been Freida McFadden, whose Housemaid series became an internet phenomenon, prompting Natalie Barelli, bestselling author of Unforgivable, to warn, “Don’t start a Freida McFadden book late at night. You won’t be able to put it down!”

We’ve assembled some of McFadden’s best for your summer reading pleasure, but if you’ve already torn through all of her stories, or are just looking for some alternative thrills and chills, we’ve also put together a few other shivery mysteries that make for perfect summer reading.

The Last Murder at the End of the World

The Last Murder at the End of the World

By Stuart Turton

Think you’ve seen it all when it comes to murder mysteries? Think again. Author Stuart Turton brings the genre “a fresh twist on dystopian fiction with its share of surprises” (Kirkus Reviews) in this story of an island that is all that is left of the world’s population after a mysterious fog wiped out everyone else. Just over a hundred people live on the island in peace and harmony – but last night, one of them was murdered.

The problem is, nobody knows who did it or why, not even the murderer, since the island’s sophisticated security system wiped out everyone’s memory. Now, the clock is ticking in this “dazzling and mind-boggling” (Booklist) mix of whodunit and postapocalyptic thriller.
