Witches have taken over pop culture in recent years, from Wicked to Agatha All Along—and it’s no surprise! Often, these colorful depictions show women standing and basking in their full power.

Especially when considering that the witch trials happened not so long ago, it is incredibly moving to see these feminist narratives not only fulfilled but praised.

Beyond curses and broomsticks, within these pages are tales of generational magic and spine-tingling thrillers. In many cases, women—whether friends, family, or communities—are coming together in surprising and awe-inspiring ways.

What better way to kick off Halloween than with witch-centered stories that flip previously held misconceptions on their heads! Here are eight witchy books to savor this Spooky Season.

Practical Magic

Practical Magic

By Alice Hoffman

It’s only fitting we kick off this list with a classic. The basis for the movie starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, Practical Magic follows the Owens sisters as they navigate loss and, despite everything, continue to search for love.

For more than two hundred years, everything that has gone wrong in the small town of Massecheuts has been blamed on Gillian and Sally. Their ancestors, too, were routinely taunted and talked about, but now, the sisters attempt to escape that cycle: one by marrying, the other by running away.

Yet, they always seem to be pulled back to each other, as if there’s a sort of magical force at play…
