Prime Video’s New Take on Sherlock Holmes Shows a Different Side to the Detective

With over a century of film and television adaptations, Sherlock Holmes has always been in vogue. He is easily the most portrayed—and celebrated—literary figure, from Basil Rathbone’s 1930s movies to Benedict Cumberbatch in the modern BBC Sherlock

The latest take from Prime Video, Young Sherlock, reimagines the iconic sleuth as a hot-headed, emotionally vulnerable Oxford student—rather than the cold genius he’s been solidified as. Directed by Guy Ritchie, who has previously made two feature-film Sherlock Holmes adaptations starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, the series focuses on the detective’s early development, with his troublemaker tendencies and strained family dynamics.

Starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin, known for his role in the After series, he plays a 19-year-old Sherlock who can’t help but get into trouble.

Intrigued? Look no further—all eight episodes of the series are now available for streaming. With fast-moving scenes and witty dialogue, you’ll be hard-pressed not to watch it in one sitting!

Once you’re finished—if you haven’t already—move on to this great series from author Andrew Lane, which also follows the detective in his teenage years. Bridging the gap between Sherlock’s childhood and the adult portrayed in Arthur Conan Doyle’s original series, dangerous mysteries and shocking twists abound.

The first book in Lane’s Young Sherlock Holmes series, Death Cloud, details a 14-year-old Sherlock on summer break from boarding school. Staying with his eccentric aunt and uncle in Hampshire, two locals die from mysterious circumstances. Holmes, naturally, decides to get to the bottom of it, teaming up with his new tutor, Amyus Crowe.

Honoring the original spirit of Sherlock, Andrew Lanes delivers rapid-fire adventures, while introducing a host of exciting characters—and foes.
