Remembering Dolly Parton: Country Icon, Beloved by All

Dolly Parton was, among many other labels, a legendary singer, songwriter, actress, businesswoman, and philanthropist. Raised in a one-bedroom cabin in Tennessee with her 11 siblings, she would go on to win 11 Grammy Awards and sell more than 100 million records worldwide.

After a brief battle with cancer, her nephew Bryan Seaver announced, on behalf of her family, that she died on August 25, 2026. She is survived by six of her siblings. 

Dolly Parton was known for leaning into and playing with stereotypes. From her big hair to larger-than-life persona, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who didn’t know and, in turn, love Parton. 

She grew up singing in her local church and, as a teenager, began performing on her local TV station. But her big break came in 1967, when she was hired for the Porter Wagoner Show, a country music program. 

In the years that followed, she released some of her biggest hits, “Jolene” and “I Will Always Love You”—the latter later a Whitney Houston chart-topper. Since then, Parton has been known as the Queen of Country and has become one of the genre’s biggest ambassadors. 

In 1980, Parton made her theatrical film debut with 9 to 5, earning her an Academy Award nomination and two Grammy Awards for its title track. She went on to star in Steel Magnolias and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

Across her whole career, Parton has always found a way to give back to the communities that shaped her. In 1994, she published her memoir, Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business, and in the following year, established her flagship effort, the Imagination Library. Each month, the program mails a free book to enrolled children, regardless of family income. Now, the effort has expanded internationally and has distributed more than 200 million books. 

Some of her other major philanthropic initiatives include donating $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center’s research in 2020 for Covid-19 vaccination funding, her “My People Fund,” which helped families following the Great Smoky Mountain wildfires in 2016, and her Dollywood Foundation. 

Dolly Parton was more than a celebrity—she was a unifying figure who brought people together regardless of political and cultural affiliations. She will be forever mourned, but remembered, in the ways we choose to love and show up for one another—regardless of differences.
