Young adult literature is aimed at a younger age group (12-18 years) and features themes from adult literature, such as friendship, sexuality, and substance abuse, on a more cautious scale.
YA books are marketed towards middle school and high-school-aged people, with ages 12-14 on the younger end of the scale and ages 15-18 on the older end of the scale. But this is not to say that adults cannot also enjoy young adult literature.
