It's no secret that, like most of the literary world, we're big fans of Elena Ferrante. Her Neapolitan Quartet has already been adapted into a wildly successful HBO series named after the first book in the series, My Brilliant Friend. Netflix has since snatched up the rights to her newest novel, The Lying Life of Adults, and one of her first works, The Lost Daughter. The former is slated to become a series, while the latter is being released this December as a feature film.
The Lost Daughter is, without ruining the plot, a psychological drama about complicated mothers. Directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal (who also wrote the screenplay adaptation), it stars Olivia Colman as a woman who goes on vacation to the Italian seaside. While there, she becomes obsessed with another family vacationing at the beach. She's particularly taken with a young mother (Dakota Johnson) and her daughter. And then she does something extremely strange.

The film has already been met with stellar reviews at the Venice Film Festival, and considering all the incredible talent involved, we can't say we're surprised. The film arrives in theaters on December 17, and on Netflix December 31. Check out the trailer below.
