When talking about the number one mystery author of all time, Agatha Christie takes the cake. Many come close, such as Stephen King or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but Agatha Christie is not only known for the creation of popular detective crime fiction motifs, she is also the best-selling fiction author of all time, outsold only by Shakespeare.

It depends what you mean by “greatest.” If you’re looking for a mystery that will surely stump you, Cain’s Jawbone by Edward Powys Mathers is a great pick. If you’re looking for a classic that every mystery has read, Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Hound of the Baskervilles may be for you. And if you’re looking for something more contemporary, The 7 1⁄2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo are modern favorites.
